May has been a busy month for us. Who am I kidding, every month is busy around here! One of the big events was Finley’s seventh birthday. He wanted to have a pirate party and I made a scavenger hunt for him and his friends with a real treasure at the end. I used random pirate words that my Mom had printed out for me (you know, just to keep it authentic) and had the kids running all over the yard. Mostly they were running all over the yard because we don’t have a big white “bilge” that they were supposed to find.
Birthdays always make me emotional. Even though we celebrate them I secretly wish that they would be over. I can’t stand having to look at my kids and know that they are growing so fast. Birthdays make you do that. It’s easy to ignore the passing of time on regular days but not on a birthday. Even though I’m excited for him and did our ritualistic height measuring on the wall to see how much he’s grown, I secretly kept thinking to myself, “he’ll never be six years old again”.
So now we have a seven year old in our house again. A determined little force that keeps us on our toes. Already different from the six year old that I posted about last year. His obsession with rainbows seems to have subsided and I don’t think I could get him to paint his nails or wear jewelry anymore. How did these major changes happen in just one year?
For now we will just enjoy the seven year old Finley because before we know it he will be eight and want nothing to do with pirates anymore.
Happy birthday to our little treasure. You can take your time growing up. We love you just the way you are.
